Community Speedwatch

John was instrumental in setting up the very first ever Community Speedwatch (CSW) team in the Somerset village of Ash back in 2001.  Together with local Senior Police Officers, John formed what was first known as the South Somerset Community Speedwatch Group, which was a tri-partite group comprising Avon & Somerset Constabulary, South Somerset District Council and a CSW Steering Team (which John chaired for a number of years).     Today, almost 20 years later, Avon & Somerset Constabulary have CSW Networks across all seven of their areas - with over 1,200 roadside volunteers, and CSW has spread to almost every Force throughout the UK.    In later years, John became the 'external liaison manager' for the Steering Team, introducing CSW to other interested constabularies in the UK and in one or two other Countries.     He was professional in all that he attempted, a stickler for adherence to the rules and a perfect-gentleman to boot.

Road Safety in the UK - and South Somerset in particular - owes a huge debt to a man of his word.
